 Cleaning and Conditioning.

We recommend that leather furniture and interior should be professionally cleaned around once every 6 to 12 months, depending on environment and usage. Although there are leather cleaning products on the market many of them contain silicones and are strong in alkaline. This will make it look nice at the time of application, but will eventually do untold damage to the look and feel of the leather.

The silicone will prevent the leather from being nourished / conditioned. It will also attract dirt and grease, and because leather is protein the acids from the fats will break it down. In the case of protected / pigmented leathers it will destroy the finish. Once cleaned it is important to replenish the finish. This is the fine protective coating that is applied on top of the colour / pigment.

If the finish is not maintained, the leather will be susceptible to many problems, such as; dye transfer, cracking, fading of colour and excessive soiling.

Just as important as cleaning is conditioning (putting the moisture back into the fats and oils that leather contains). Leather needs moisture. If it is not nourished with a conditioner regularly it will absorb the oils from your body, hands, hair etc.

Spillages will be drawn deep into the leather. The life of your furniture will be shortened. Aniline leathers will normally get very grubby and lose there soft feel.

Coated/ protected leathers will craze/ crack and may also peel.

It is also important to note that when conditioned regularly leather is much easier to clean and with better results.

 Grease.

 What's happenened to the leather?

This is a two colour sofa. Grease and hair products have eaten  away at the finish. The top colour has deteriorated and the base colour is showing through.Grease can also darken the leather especially if the leather is aniline or semi aniline.

 Probable cause.

Lack of conditioning and appropriate cleaning has enabled the grease to be drawn under the topcoat and loosen the bond with the base colour. Silicone in hair products have also contributed to the deterioration of the finish as they stop the leather from being nourished, and attract dirt.

Treatment / Result. *Cleaning / Restoration / Repair

*Restoration / Remove all traces of grease, dirt and silicone.Recreate the mottled pattern and blend with matching top colour.

 Fading

  What's happenened to the leather?

The coating on Chesterfields and many other suites are antiqued. This requires two coats of pigment of different colour. And in this case the top coat has worn away two reveal the bottom lighter coat.

   Probable cause.

Age of suite is the biggest cause although aggressive cleaning and poor application of the second coat can be a factor.

Treatment / Result. *Cleaning / Restoration / Repair

Restoration. / Remove all affected top colour and re-apply. Artwork is needed to affect the antique look. You must keep these types of suites conditioned.

 Colour change

This sofa is brand new but the customer could not get it in black. Keep it in mind when you see the style you like but the wrong colour.

This is Harrods aniline sofa which was very badly faded, the customer wanted colour change and for it not to fade. So we changed into a protected leather to stop fading and suggested a mushroom colour to blend in with her decor.

Personalise your car interior fo a fraction of the cost of new leather trim.

This is a replaced panel. Upholsterers find it cost effective and more accurate for us to colour match there work. This way they guarantee the customer the exact colour and left over leather will never go to waste.
